Throughout all of Scripture, the fundamental basis of a right relationship with God, hinges on the fact that God communicates Himself and His plans and values to us, and we in turn are to hear what God is speaking and respond appropriately. The speaking activity of God is summed up in that which we call the Word of God. Our salvation, and our success in life depends on Hearing the Word of God and responding well to what He speaks. This parable gives a great word picture of the things that get in the way of hearing well, and challenges those who have ears to hear, to give careful attention to the Word of God. By this, our life will grow into a maturity that produces much for God's kingdom when we receive fully God's Word - by battling against 1) spiritual deception that would steal God's truth, 2) discouragement that results from hardship and persecution, 3) the worries of life, personal comfort, and worldly pleasures that distract and turn us away from following fully God's Word.
