Is there life after death and how can we know? It is beyond empirical proof, so how can we know or have any confidence that there is life beyond the grave? Do we cease to exist, does our soul, or spirit live on? The Sadducees are convinced there cannot be life after death, and they imagine that a wife with seven husbands here on earth, will find herself in a tangled web of polygamy with all seven husbands wanting her to be their wife! In their minds this shows how ridiculous is the notion of life after death.
Jesus affirms that there is indeed life after death and we can be certain based on the authority of God's revelation as affirmed and explained by Jesus, who is the eternal living proof of the resurrection! Jesus shows how God revealed to Moses that the spirit of a person exists beyond physical death. He affirms that one day there will be a resurrection - the restoring of our bodies with our eternal souls, and that eternal life with God is reserved for those who are found worthy at the Great Judgment when God determine the eternal destiny of every soul. Jesus had no problem untying this difficult theological knot. The solution was simple and rooted in a plain understanding of Scripture. The Sadducees were mistakes because they were viewing the resurrection from the vantage point of life on earth, not from the view of eternity. How much of our theology and understanding of the Bible is off because we are seeing it all with only human vision, and not with the eyes of God.
