Jesus sets the standard of faith as one who has a heart of compassion that moves us to take action in response to the needs we see around us. Jesus seems to say that we are to show unlimited mercy, but how can we do that when we are people with significant limits in abilities and resources? When our lives have been transformed by the healing power of the Gospel, we do become people of compassion who are moved to help others. But we not do this, as finite creatures, by rescuing, fixing, or solving people’s problems for them. Instead, we coming alongside people in a way that helps them stand on their own, and by leading them to discover Jesus, the ultimate resources and solution to ALL our problems. We become the hands of Christ that meets immediate needs in tangible ways. We help people develop skills, resources, and opportunities, so they can stand on their own. Finally, we seek to lead people to Jesus who is able to meet all their needs and give them a life of joy, to His glory.
