Exodus 12 brings us right to the very edge of God's final act of judgment that will bring about the freedom of His people - at long last! But, right before unleashing the grand climax of His mighty acts, the story pauses so that God can tell them how to fix dinner!! Wouldn't it make more sense to have a feast to celebrate after it's all done? It is almost as if the celebration of Passover has more significance than the actual rescue? What's more, this festival is to become their annual New Year's celebration, from this point forward and forever. Is remembering the oppression of Egypt and the plagues that brought about their freedom really the best way to start off a new year?
