Summary - God has been blessing Israel greatly by expanding their numbers into a nation just as He had promised Abraham. But that promise is in peril as Pharaoh is determined to reduce the number of Israelites by any means. This brings to the forefront the second part of God's promise which has not yet been fulfilled - that He would give them a land of their own so they could be an autonomous people, not an enslaved nation. The Israelites are in desperate need of rescue. They need a deliverer who will set them free from their current bondage and oppression, and bring them into the land of promise.
