Big Idea - What does the visit of the Magi tell us about Jesus? The place of the Messiah's birth was not random - it was proclaimed ahead of time as a matter of prophetic revelation from God. Is the visit of the Magi simply a colorful and dramatic story to highlight Jesus’ birth, or does it serve to teach us theological truths about who Jesus is? Matthew is very purposeful in including the account of the Magi and He intends us to learn significant truths about Jesus and about the way God directs people to know Him, or more accurately to find Him. First, this account demonstrates that Jesus’ Messianic claim is supported by His birth in Bethlehem (He was born in the right place). Second, the only way to “find” Jesus is through God’s revelation. Revelation is given for the very purpose of bringing us to Himself through Jesus Messiah, the pinnacle of all revelation. Therefore, the right response to God's revelation is to diligently follow where it leads until we find Jesus, and in finding Him there is great joy which leads us to worship Him. Thirdly, The Good News is for all, even the most sinful and wicked enemies of God. All who follow God's revelation in faith will find Jesus and His grace!
