This is an 8-hour block of music programming I produced for the 10PM-6AM slot on WCLM 1450 AM in Richmond, Virginia for Friday September 8, 2017. The station manager, Preston Brown, wanted to fill the overnight slot with programming and he gave me complete autonomy to choose the music and DJs for this broadcast. I asked two Richmond musicians I knew to make shows for this block of programming. Hosted by local deviant, noise-making advocate, and sound obsessive Gary Stevens, Rat Ward Radio is dedicated to rare, underground, and forgotten music, with a focus on DIY obscurities, home tapers, hidden gems, and private press releases. The Hustle Season, hosted by longtime Richmond musician Kelli Strawbridge, is a survey of funk, soul, jazz, and disco told and mixed from a player’s perspective. Along with my show, I wanted this block of programming to showcase the diversity of the city’s music selectors unified by each of our passion for audio expression in its myriad of forms and guises. I must forever thank Preston Brown for allowing me to be myself on the Richmond airwaves over the years as his stewardship and the importance of the only non-segregated, commercial radio station in this former capital of the confederacy cannot be overstated. While low power radio stations such as Richmond’s own WRIR 97. 3 carries on the tradition of great American FM radio freeform music programming, WCLM reached audiences and represented communities that tied the diverse fabric of Richmond, Virginia together long before low power community radio stations were in existence. I am forever grateful and honored to be part of the station's history.
