Ученым интересно понять почему все больше и больше людей меняют религию своих предков на нечто новое, или вообще отказываются от религии и веры в сверхъестественное. Что объединяет этих людей? Или каким путем они идут после того, как выбрали жизнь без религии. В своей книге Пробуждение Атеиста, социологи религии Ричард Симино и Кристофер Смит –рассматривают рост и развитие организованного атеизма и гуманизма в Соединенных Штатах. Их вывод в том что атеизм возрождается как ответ на влияние религиозных консерваторов на политику США. Симино и Смит поясняют, что, чувствуя себя исключенными из общественной жизни, #атеисты пересмотрели свои стратегии, как в оборонительной, так и в наступательной борьбе с фундаменталистами.
