Animal Skin
sound work composed by Grant Jurius,  co-production Lumpen station

LUMPEN CONNEXIONS is a room dedicated to host sound works by artist coming from different backgrounds and around the worlds.

Animal Skin is composed from field recordings collected during the artist's art residency program in Basel, Switzerland, July - September 2022. Animal Skin is an ongoing project that includes a series of paintings and sonic compositions that focuses on texture, space, wall surfaces + natural environments.

The project looks at space and its surfaces as a living organism. Breathing, communicating, living with experiences that records the narratives that occur within them. The artist looks to monumental landmarks implemented by both man and nature. Posing questions to the values we place in monuments, architecture, design and its effects on nature and vice versa.

*Grant improvises as layers the field recordings intuitively to evoke the feeling of traveling through the space explored. This conveys the sense of someone finding their way through the dark as they navigate the environment.

By placing emphasis on the spaces that surround us we may hear back narratives lost and found through texture. The artist utilises space as a means of call and response similar to ancient ritual. Treating modern urbanised spaces as sacred places new values in them and thus opens the artist to these narratives
