I HAD IT HARDER THAN YOU DO

On this episode of Conversations About Conversations, I discuss the reflective instinct to ONE UP my mentee with: "You think you have it hard—I had it harder than you do."

The problem is when we don't exercise SELF-CONTROL (or thoughtfulness) in our conversations, they create results that we never would have consciously chosen.

After reflecting on the conversation:
a. I felt like I invalidated him.
b. I felt like a JERK.
c. I felt like the old curmudgeon complaining about walking 5 miles uphill barefoot in the snow to school.

I didn't intend to feel any of these ways or put my mentee down. It was a good reminder to be more careful, more THOUGHTFUL and ASK MORE QUESTIONS instead of reacting with my own complaints.

How often do you see people trying to one up each other about how bad their lives are or how much they've suffered?

Is this a productive conversation?
