Tell us about your work.

So my career started in the consulting world because I loved being able to help out businesses - big, small you name it. I loved being able to make a positive impact and improve businesses and, hopefully, people's lives as well. So fast forward a little bit, my wife is now a dentist and has been for about eight years. So originally, we planned to start with one dental clinic and then start growing that until we run several practices. Then I realized that I'd rather be able to help out multiple businesses instead of only working with one or two. So I started consulting for my wife's practice, a couple of other dentists' practices and some nonprofits.

One thing you preach is keeping it simple. How do you keep it simple when people start to think that they are big entrepreneurs?

One of the biggest components we focus on when I implement is called the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS). EOS is a framework that takes a holistic approach at strengthening a business. We talk about hitting the ceiling a lot of times, so there are five different leadership abilities that we work on within EOS. The first one of those is actually to simplify - so less is more what like you mentioned before. There are practices that say, "Okay, I'm going to set up like my fortune 500 company." Well, fortune 500 companies are extremely complex. So what we do is we take a look at the EOS model itself. You can see we've got six different components that every business has. It doesn't matter what businesses they are, they all have these six components. So they are vision, people, data, issues, process and traction. So every business has those six. If you want to simplify things, take a look at the fact that any weakness you have within your organization - your dental practice, your small business - are all able to fall into one of these six buckets. When we have these six buckets, we work on strengthening every one of them. So today, what we're gonna get to do is just kind of talk through how I'm able to come in and help dental practices, how businesses, in general, can run off of this operating system. So by running off of a single operating system that has the "less is more" mentality, that's one of the best ways that you can begin by simplifying how you're going to get your practice from where you're at today to where it is that you would like to be.

When hiring, is it better to get the right personalities from a person you're looking at hiring? Or is it more important to get someone who knows exactly how to do the work by the book and you might not have to teach them as much?

So with EOS, we take a two-seat approach. So it's the right person and the right seat. When I work with clients, what we do is we say, "Okay, we're going to go ahead and identify what our core values are." So let's say you've got four core values. We're also going to do something we call GWC - we're going to make sure the person "gets" it, that they "want" it and that they have "capacity" for it. It's a really simple tool that we use. It's not necessarily bulletproof, but it does help push you in the right direction. However, if you have someone who only matches two out of your four core values - or they get it, and they have a capacity for it, but the reality is that they don't want it - at the end of the day, you're going to have someone who's not wanting to be there. If you have someone who doesn't want to be there - they're not engaged, they're not going to help you drive towards what the vision of your overall practice or company is at that point in time. So it's twofold. It has to be both someone who gets it, wants it and has the capacity for it. And then someone who is going to be a good cultural fit as well.
