The Battle of Blair Mountain is the largest American insurrection in our nation's history since the Civil War. It caught the country surprise but not the people of West Virginia's southern coalfields, who had endured the indentured servitude of out-of-state coal companies and the venomous cruelty of their henchman, the Baldwin-Felts Detectives. After the assassination of Sid Hatfield, the tempers of the region reached a fever pitch that boiled into the largest labor uprising in history.
