Hi all this mix was inspired while working on an art project "Eddie Olley's Dance Floor Abstracts". "Dance Floor Abstracts" is a compilation of the many dance floor pix I have taken over the years. As a conceptual artist I work on images while listening to music. All genres of music. Over the years I became mostly interested in dancing and mixing dance music as an artistic expression. In this particular mix I chose to mix Four Decades of Genre (not intended to be chronological or all inclusive). Mostly House (Jack, Acid, Chicago, Jazz, Soul, Afro, Latin, Vocal, Funk, Spiritual, T-Pop, Disco, Reggae, Hip House, R&B, Minimalist, Factory, Industrial, Big Room, Freestyle, UK, Tech etc.).
DJ/Producer's such as Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan, Junior Vasquez, Maurice Joshua, Paul Johnson, Cevin Fisher, Joey Negro, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Ralphi Rosario, Louie Vega, MAW, Tony Moran, Warren Rigg, Jody den Broeder, Freemasons, Robbie Leslie, David Morales, Bob Sinclar, (as well as those not included in mix) Todd Terry, Tracy Young, Susan Morbito, Moto Blanco, R3hab, Dave Aude, Knee Deep, David Guetta, Wideboys, 7th Heaven, Jonathan Peters, Thunderpuss, Avicii, Axwell, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, The Chainsmokers, Jump Smokers, Fredde Le Grand, Sam Smith, Calvin Harris, Danny Tenaglia, Roger Sanchez, Afrojack, Skrillex, Martin Sloveig and many of the UK House DJ's etc. have all inspired me.
The Resident FI/NYC venue DJ's I've enjoyed dancing to for years are alphabetically: DJ Brenda Black, DJ Chris Camuso, DJ Corey Craig, DJ Lina, DJ Max Rodriguez, DJ Randy Bettis, DJ Steve Oliveri, DJ Vito Fun, DJ Warren Gluck and DJ Xavier to name a few.
From a visual perspective if I was to assign a comparison of DJ/Producer's to painters of the past I would have to say the DJ Picaso of our time is Junior Vasquez. I find his abstract, almost cubist like style of using multiple samples, vocals, percussion and bass lines making up one track is exquisite as in "Cum On U Can Git It" and "My Loleatta". Jr's "Alive Homodustrial Dub" on the other hand provides dark, cavernous, abstract base lines with provocative mood inducing tense pauses indicative of the steamy; sweat laden industrial after hour venues. It reminds me of Picaso's Blue Period. Larry Levan's style makes me think of Van Gogh and his heavy brush strokes as Larry Levan uses heavy, thick samples - almost pressured - leading to a beautiful whole. Frankie Knuckles however makes me think of Rembrandt or Monet with beautiful, soft passages. Well enough of comparisons... enjoy the mix and decide for yourself how you hear each DJ's style.
