The majority of anglers simply pull a shiny new lure out of its packaging, tie it on the line and start fishing. What's wrong with that? Well, the majority of anglers are not the ones who catch most of the fish.
When I talk to tournament pro's, professional fishing videographers or journalists I often find that they modify their lures to improve their results. Sometimes the tweaks are simple, like upgrading hooks. Other times they're more complex and often they're top secret.
