This time we examine how racism has infiltrated popular culture and is continually spread via the most accessible platform in today's day and age; social media. The most pervasive racist issue that hand is the direct correlation between how people of color are portrayed in the media and the current racist environment. When the public is only seeing the extreme ends of the social spectrum- the tiny minority of celebrities and criminals; they are being fed a mental diet of envy and fear. This only serves to encourage hateful racist behavior and does not allow for images that are relatable to the average American of any color. Social media then exasperates these issues by permitting social platforms to amplify hateful rhetoric under the guise of free speech.
