In a recent episode of the Secured Podcast, host Mike Matranga embarked on a candid exploration of a topic he once dismissed: the school-to-prison pipeline. Reflecting on a pivotal interview with the Texas Journal in early 2018, Matranga openly admitted his initial skepticism and subsequent realization of the harsh reality.

During the interview, conducted just three months into Matranga's tenure, he was questioned about the criminalization of students and the existence of a pipeline funneling them from schools into the criminal justice system. At that time, he adamantly brushed off the concept as "BS" and a "bullshit liberal philosophy."

However, with the passage of time and accumulating experience, Matranga's perspective underwent a profound transformation. He candidly acknowledged his earlier dismissal as a mistake, stating, "I was wrong. There is a school-to-prison pipeline."

Matranga emphasized that denial of this reality often stems from political biases, with conservative voters, in particular, downplaying or ignoring the issue to align with their party's beliefs. He passionately advocated for a more compassionate approach, urging a reevaluation of disciplinary practices within educational institutions.

"We need to just let kids handle things on their own, might sometimes," Matranga concluded, highlighting the need for systemic change to ensure that all students have access to education without the looming threat of incarceration.

Matranga's candid acknowledgment serves as a reminder of the importance of humility and openness to new perspectives. By recognizing and addressing the realities of the school-to-prison pipeline, he underscores the urgency of systemic change to create a more equitable future for all.
