Description

Uyghur visual artists are creating work to express the complexities of home, belonging, and identity in diaspora. In this episode we go to London and Virginia to visit two artists whose work is informed by their distinct experiences of memory, self, and reconnection.

Mamatjan Juma talks about the role of art in the personal and the collective, and Camilla Dilshat shares about how her art is a way to explore a diasporic home.

Urghur Art in Exile looks at the Uyghur diaspora and its cultural and artistic production that draw the world’s attention and bear witness to the various abuses perpetrated at home by the Chinese government. It also aims to understand new expressions of nostalgia in Uyghur cultural production and the relationships between individual trauma and collective struggle, as well as the emerging role of Uyghur art in community building.
