Description

Amy Donaldson and Jasen Lee talk about Gender Racism and Racial Battle Fatigue with guest Dr. William Smith, associate professor in the Department of Education, Culture & Society at the University of Utah.

Discrimination has long been an issue for minorities and women in the workplace, school and within society in general. Dr. Smith talks about his research on the effects of discrimination from overt ethnic racism or gender racism and the resulting ‘racial battle fatigue’ – the lasting effects of having to consistently struggle against micro-agressions in nearly every social setting.

We discuss the various ways discrimination occurs and why, along with its impact on the targets of racial or gender bias. Whether implicit or explicit, the influences are real and can be debilitating to many. Dr. Smith offers some insights on how to recognize gender racism and racial battle fatigue and what can be done to mitigate these ongoing issues of societal discrimination.
