The Finnish capital city of Helsinki has been named the happiest city in the world by the United Nations World Happiness Report. Finland has also been named the happiest country for the third time in a row by the same report.
This is the first time the report has ranked cities as well as countries. It used data from surveys of adults in 186 cities done between 2014 and 2018, asking how happy people were with their lives.
After Helsinki, the happiest cities were Aarhus in Denmark, Wellington in New Zealand, Zurich in Switzerland and Copenhagen, also in Denmark. The happiest countries were Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Iceland and Norway.
The five lowest ranked cities were Juba in South Sudan, Port-au-Prince in Haiti, Gaza in Palestine, Sanaa in Yemen and Kabul in Afghanistan. The least happy countries were the Central African Republic, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, South Sudan and Afghanistan.
The study found that people in cities were a little happier than other people in the same country – especially in the unhappiest countries.
The cities that had the most improved happiness between 2014 and 2018 were found in West Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Abidjan in the Ivory Coast improved the most, followed by Dushanbe in Tajikistan and Vilnius in Lithuania.
Around 4.2 billion people live in cities – 55.3% of the global population. The report says this number will increase to 6 billion by 2045.
