A Hong Kong businessman has sold a parking space in the city for $969,000, making it the most expensive parking space in the world.
The space is in The Center, one of the tallest buildings in Hong Kong. It was sold by Johnny Cheung Shun-yee, one of 10 people who bought the building for $5 billion in 2018. He did not say who had bought the parking space, but told the South China Morning Post that they owned an office in the building.
Finished in 1998, The Center has over 1,200 square meters of shopping space and more than 110,000 square meters of office space, but just 402 parking spaces.
The South China Morning Post reports that the average price of a parking space in The Center is $765,000. In August, Cheung sold two of his other parking spaces for a total of $1.6 million.
The parking space is just 12.5 square meters, meaning it cost about $77,500 per square meter. That is more than three times the average price for space in a home in Hong Kong – and homes in Hong Kong have been the most expensive in the world for the last nine years. In fact, the price of parking in Hong Kong has been rising even faster than the price of housing.
According to a report by real estate company CBRE, the average cost of a home in Hong Kong is $1.2 million, or about $22,500 per square meter. In the next most expensive city, Singapore, it's about $875,000, or $11,500 per square meter.
