Video games have been used to test the thinking and movement skills of animals such as monkeys, apes, pigeons and rats for a long time. But now, researchers have also taught pigs how to play a simple video game.
In research conducted at Pennsylvania State University, four pigs learned to use a joystick to move a white circle from the center of a screen to hit a "wall" at the top, bottom or side of the screen.
If the pigs were able to move the circle to the wall, they were given food as a reward.
The game was easy at first, with walls on all four sides of the screen. However, as the pigs got better at moving the circle, the game got harder, with fewer walls to hit: first three, then two, then one, then smaller and smaller parts of one wall.
If the pigs failed, the game got easier again.
On the one-wall test, all four pigs got results that were "above chance," the researchers wrote. They said this means the pigs — who were named Hamlet, Omelet, Ebony and Ivory — at least partly understood the game and were flexible in their behavior.
Some of the pigs were much better at playing the game than others. For example, when there was just one wall, Ebony could hit it only 34% of the time, while Ivory could hit it 76% of the time.
The joysticks were difficult for the pigs to use, however. The researchers say that any future study on pigs should try using a touch screen instead.
