As Americans look for ways to get outside safely during the coronavirus pandemic, snowmobiles have become hugely popular.
Much like the market for boats, bicycles and outdoor furniture, the snowmobile industry is going through its biggest boom in decades, making it difficult to find a new one for sale, or even one for rent.
"We've had some good years and some bad years, but we've never had anything quite like this one," said Dave Jones at Jackman Powersports, a store selling snowmobiles in the state of Maine.
Nearly a third of recent sales were to new riders, Jones said, adding that he would sell more snowmobiles if he could get more from manufacturers.
Snowmobile sales are expected to increase 15% to 20% this winter, the most since the winter of 1995-96, said Ed Klim of the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association.
"They just want to get outside," Klim said, talking about snowmobile buyers. He said people are tired of sitting inside watching TV.
Compared to winter sports like skiing, which is popular in the northern states, snowmobiling has fewer pandemic restrictions and riders can easily stay away from other people.
