South Korea's population has fallen for the first time in the country's modern history. According to government data, South Korea's population at the end of December 2020 was 51.8 million, a decrease of about 20,840 from 2019.
The data, reported by the Yonhap News Agency, showed 275,815 births in South Korea in 2020, and 307,764 deaths.
South Korea's population has risen every year for decades. However, the country's rate of population growth fell from 1.49% in 2010 to just 0.05% by 2019.
In a 2020 study by the UN that looked at 201 countries, South Korea had the lowest fertility rate at just 1.1. Countries need a fertility rate of at least 2.1 to stop their populations decreasing.
The South Korean government is trying to encourage couples to have more children by offering financial help. However, high costs for homes and education still make having children difficult for many.
