Every year, chemical company Kuraray asks first-grade elementary school students across Japan what they would like to be when they grow up. 4,000 young students shared their dream jobs between July and December 2019 for the 2020 report.
Since the first survey in 1999, the number one job every year for girls has been baker, and it was chosen by 26% of girls in the 2020 report. For boys, the winner once again is athlete, and was chosen by 18.8%.
The rest of the top five jobs for girls are being a celebrity, working as a nurse, followed by florist at fourth and nursery school teacher in fifth. Being a celebrity, which received 8.8% of the 2020 vote, has taken second place for girls every year for the past nine years.
For boys, the second place job is police officer. This has been the second choice for boys over the last nine years, but more boys than ever want to become a police officer, at 15.1%. Third place is public transportation driver, followed by firefighter and rescue worker in fourth, with TV star or anime character coming in fifth.
While the top 10 jobs for both boys and girls were the same as in the 2019 report, some jobs have moved up or down on the list. Doctors, nurses and police officers were all one position higher on the list in 2020.
Japan's first-grade elementary school students are 6 or 7 years old.
