The Toyota Motor Corporation can once again call itself the biggest car company in the world, after selling over 9.5 million vehicles in 2020. German car company Volkswagen, which had been the biggest car company since 2016, sold just over 9.3 million vehicles in 2020.
Toyota first became the biggest car company in the world in 2008, taking the title from General Motors (GM). The US company had been the highest selling carmaker in the world since 1931, when it sold more vehicles than Ford for the first time.
GM took the lead again in 2011 after the large earthquake and tsunami in Japan that year caused problems for the country's car industry. But Toyota took back the title in 2012, holding it until Volkswagen took the lead in 2016.
However, both Toyota and Volkswagen sold less cars in 2020 than in 2019 because of the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, across all car companies around the world, 14% less vehicles were sold.
When it comes to market capitalization, or the total value of a company's shares, the big car industry winner in 2020 wasn't Toyota, Volkswagen, or even GM — it was Tesla. Despite selling just under 500,000 cars in 2020, the US electric car company's share price exploded in June of that year.
