The days of pets flying with their owners free of charge are coming to an end.
Bringing animals on planes became popular several years ago, with many passengers traveling with their pets for free by saying they need them for emotional support.
Airlines say that because any animal could be brought on a plane, passengers were no longer just bringing service animals. Some passengers had brought animals such as cats, turtles, pigs and even a peacock.
However, the US Transportation Department has announced that only dogs will be able to fly as service animals from January. The department said that one reason it was changing the rules was because passengers carrying unusual animals on planes made many people think that real service animals were not important.
Under the new rule, only dogs that are trained to help a person with a disability will be allowed as a service animal. Passengers with other emotional support animals will have to either pay to put them into the cargo hold or leave them at home.
The Transportation Department suggested the new rule in January and received more than 15,000 comments on it. While 3,000 people agreed with the rule, 6,000 said it could be a bad thing, including people with mental health problems, the department said.
Delta Air Lines says it carried about 250,000 animals, including service dogs, in 2017 and about 600,000 in 2019.
