A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that most teenagers in the US don't eat enough fruits and vegetables.
According to the nation's 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, girls aged 14 to 18 should have at least 2.5 cups of vegetables and 1.5 cups of fruit every day. Boys aged 14 to 18 should have 3 cups of vegetables and 2 cups of fruit.
The CDC used data from over 13,000 high school students, collected as part of its Youth Risk Behavior Survey in 2017. This research found that only 7.1% of US teenagers were eating the minimum amount of fruits and only 2% were eating the minimum amount of vegetables.
The study also looked at differences in the results between 33 US states.Connecticut had the lowest number high school students who ate enough fruit, at 4%, while Louisiana had the highest at 9.3%. At 0.6%, Kansas had the lowest number high school students who ate enough vegetables, and New Mexico had the highest at just 3.7%.
The results of the 2017 surveys are even worse than in earlier studies. In 2013, 8.5% of high school students were eating enough fruit, and 2.1% ate enough vegetables.
