Today, we are going to share with you a hymn, "We Plough the Fields and Scatter." Initially, it was written by a German poet, Matthias Claudius in 1782. The tune was attributed to Johann A. P. Shulz in 1800. In 1862, a British English teacher, Jane M. Campbell, who was proficient in German, translated it into English. She then taught the English version of this hymn to the children of the Sunday School, located in the parish of the Church of England in London.
Matthias was born into a Lutheran family; his father was a pastor. At about 20 years old, he abandoned his Christian faith, turning away from God. In 1777, he was inflicted with a severe illness that caused him to rethink and reflect on the true values of life and faith, and then he repented before God.
During his illness, Matthias Claudius wrote several poems, including one titled "Wir pflügen und wir streuen," which consists of 17 verses, each followed by a refrain. This poem was inspired by and based on Psalm 144, which he shared with a friend one night in 1786 when he received an invitation for dinner.
When I was a child, our family used to hold a worship service every year before our New Year's Eve dinner. One of the most cherished parts of this tradition was singing the Taiwanese version of the hymn "We Plough the Fields and Scatter" to open our family's worship service.
Unlike the original German poet, the hymn's English, Chinese, and Taiwanese versions are shortened to three verses with a refrain. In its various adaptations, this hymn conveys our universal gratitude for God's providence through his endless love, abundant grace, and loving sustenance. This song was also adapted in the song "All Good Gifts" in the musical Godspell, which was shown on Off-Broadway in 1971.

大學時代，偶然的一次機會接觸音樂劇之後，就喜歡上音樂劇。Godspell是一部根據聖經馬太福音改編的音樂劇。這齣音樂劇原本是美國某大學的戲劇系學生的一個專案，1971年在外百老匯(Off-Broadway)演出後，接續獲得長期的成功，還發行了音樂原聲帶(cast albums)，1973年甚至被翻拍成電影。Godspell音樂劇中許多的歌曲，採用傳統聖詩的歌詞，而後在音樂上加以作改編。在Godspell音樂劇中有一首歌曲〈一切美善的恩賜〉( “All Good Gifts”)，其歌詞的內容就是採用今天要和大家分享的聖詩、其中第一節和第三節的歌詞。今天分享的聖詩，英文標題為“We Plough the Fields and Scatter”；宣道會1986年出版的《生命聖詩》，將此聖詩中文標題翻譯為〈農夫辛苦耕作忙〉；長老會出版的台語聖詩則將標題翻譯為〈阮犁田撒好種子〉—也是我們今天要和大家分享的版本。
記得小時候每年吃年夜飯前，家族會舉行簡單的家庭禮拜，為著上帝過去一年對我們的看顧與保守獻上感謝。禮拜開始經常會唱的就是台語首聖詩〈阮犁田撒好種子〉；在美國，這首聖詩經常在感恩節(Thanksgiving)吟唱；歐洲則是在收割慶典時期會吟唱這首讚美詩。
台語聖詩〈阮犁田撒好種子〉("We Plough the Fields and Scatter")最初原本是一首德國的讚美詩。詩詞是由德國詩人Matthias Claudius (1740 – 1815)所創作。Matthias Claudius出生在路德宗的基督教家庭；父親是牧師。Matthias Claudius在二十多歲時離開神，但在1777年生了一場大病，促使他重新思考什麼是生命與信仰，並悔改回到神的面前。生病期間，他寫了許多首詩。有一回受邀到朋友家中享用晚餐，Matthias Claudius在那天夜晚，和朋友分享他根據《詩篇》第144篇創作的詩；詩的標題為 “Wir pflügen und wir streuen”。這首詩詞，總共有十七節，每一節詩詞後面又都加上一段副歌，在1782年被發表。1800年由約翰 A. P. 舒爾茨 （Johann A. P. Schulz）譜曲，改為聖詩的型態後，只保留三節歌詞（有的版本是四節）加上副歌。英國的一位英語教師Jane M. Campbell，精通德文，平日就喜歡陸續將一些德國讚美詩翻譯成英文。1862年，她將這首德國讚美詩翻譯成英文後，便教導在倫敦英格蘭教會教區的孩子們吟唱。而這首原初是德文的讚美詩，又輾轉被翻譯成中文與台語。
台語聖詩〈阮犁田撒好種子〉(“We Plough the Fields and Scatter”)是一首為著上帝賜給我們五穀豐收，以及從天上賜給我們一切美好事物而向神獻上感謝的讚美詩。此讚美詩第一節歌詞的描述，讓我們聯想到使徒行傳14:17聖經經文的描述。我們的神常常向我們施予「恩惠，從天降雨，賞賜豐年，叫[我們]飲食飽足，滿心喜樂」。
第二節歌詞描述不論是空中的飛鳥、路邊的花草和天地萬物一切，都是出於神慈愛的看顧與保守。而我們身為神的兒女，神豈不是更加地愛護嗎？我們應當感謝主，感謝祂無限的慈愛與恩惠，如同馬太福音6:26所說：
「 你 們 看 那 天 上 的 飛 鳥 ， 也 不 種 ， 也 不 收 ， 也 不 積 蓄 在 倉 裡 ， 你 們 的 天 父 尚 且 養 活 他 。 你們 不 比 飛 鳥 貴 重 得 多 麼 ？」
第三歌詞則是描述，我們人類感受到神無限的慈愛與豐富的恩典，實在是無以回報，但仍然謙卑來到神面前，滿心感謝，獻上心靈的祭，懇求神能夠悅納。最後這首聖詩的副歌，則是反映了雅各書1:17的表達。
「各 樣 美 善 的 恩 賜 和 各 樣 全 備 的 賞 賜 都 是 從 上 頭 來 的 ， 從 眾 光 之 父 那 裡 降 下 來 的 ； 在 他 並沒 有 改 變 ， 也 沒 有 轉 動 的 影 兒 。」
