In twentieth century Chinese intellectual history, Liang Shuming stands as a unique figure. At 14, he contemplated suicide while pondering life's meaning. At 24, despite having no formal degrees, he was invited by Cai Yuanpei to teach Indian philosophy at Peking University, becoming one of the youngest professors of his time. His groundbreaking work Eastern and Western Cultures and Their Philosophies proposed a theory of three cultural orientations that caused an academic sensation. But he was not content to remain a pure theorist. In 1924, he boldly resigned from Peking University to conduct rural reconstruction experiments in Zouping, Shandong, where he stayed for seven years. He believed China's roots lay in the countryside and the human heart, not in simple Westernization or revolution. In 1953, at a political consultative conference, he spoke up for farmers and criticized policies that emphasized industry while neglecting agriculture, resulting in severe criticism and being labeled a rightist. During the Cultural Revolution, he endured tremendous suffering but never bowed his head, quoting Confucius to express his will. After rehabilitation during reform and opening, he continued writing in his later years, producing The Human Heart and Human Life to summarize his lifelong reflections. Liang Shuming's life was a persistent pursuit of China's cultural path and a vivid embodiment of intellectual integrity.
