從十八歲第一次踏上甲板，到用十五年行船生涯摸透海運的門道，張榮發的每一步都是靠自己走出來的。創業初期，他獨自對抗由日本和歐洲船商組成的運費同盟；石油危機最嚴峻的時候，他選擇逆勢擴張。一九七九年，他打破了航運史上長達百年的壟斷，開闢了遠東到歐洲的全貨櫃航線；一九八五年，長榮海運登頂全球第一。
這不只是一個商業成功的故事。這是一個關於眼光、魄力和對人的承諾的故事。他說過一句話：「船沉了，人不能沉。」在最困難的時刻，他選擇不裁員，選擇和員工一起扛過去。這份信念，是長榮能夠屹立至今的根基。

In 1968, a man who had grown up on the docks of Keelung set out to build a business with nothing more than one used bulk carrier and a heart that refused to quit. His name was Chang Yung-fa, founder of Evergreen Group, and the man the world would come to call the global shipping king.
From the moment he first stepped onto a ship deck at age eighteen to spending fifteen years mastering the shipping industry through self-study and hard work at sea, every step Chang Yung-fa took was earned through his own effort. In the early days of Evergreen, he stood alone against a powerful conference of Japanese and European shipping companies. When the oil crisis hit and others retreated, he expanded against the tide. In 1979 he broke a hundred years of shipping monopoly by forcing open the East Asia to Europe route. By 1985, Evergreen Marine was number one in the world.
This is more than a story of business success. It is a story about vision, courage, and a promise to the people who worked alongside him. He once said: the ship may sink, but the people cannot sink. In the hardest moments he refused to lay off his employees and chose instead to carry the burden together with them. That commitment became the foundation on which Evergreen has stood ever since.
Today, every major port in the world carries those green containers and the bold white letters spelling EVERGREEN. Behind them stands a boy from the small coastal town of Suao in Taiwan, who spent his whole life proving that where you start does not determine where you end up.
