陳鼓應，一九三五年生於福建，一九四九年隨家人渡台，是台灣最重要的道家哲學學者之一。他師承哲學大師方東美，深受儒道兩家與西方哲學影響，尤其對尼采哲學有獨特研究。
七零年代初，他因倡導學術自由，參與台大哲學系事件，遭到解聘。然而這段政治風暴並未壓垮他，反而讓他更深地沉潛於老莊的世界，從中汲取以柔克剛的生命智慧。
他的代表作老子注釋及評介，用清晰的現代語言重新詮釋老子思想，打破了長久以來神秘化老子的學術傳統，成為華人世界研究道家哲學的經典入門著作。他的莊子今注今譯，同樣是目前最權威的莊子注釋本之一。
陳鼓應還提出道家主幹說，認為道家才是先秦哲學的核心主幹，顛覆了傳統儒家主流論述，在兩岸學界引發廣泛討論。他晚年往返於台灣大學與北京大學，成為兩岸哲學交流最重要的橋樑之一。他的學術人生，本身就是老莊智慧最好的實踐。
Chen Guying, born in 1935 in Fujian Province and raised in Taiwan after 1949, stands as one of the most important Taoist scholars in the Chinese-speaking world. Mentored by the celebrated philosopher Fang Dongmei, and deeply versed in both Eastern and Western thought, Chen developed a distinctive approach that brought Taoist philosophy into dialogue with Nietzsche, Heidegger, and the broader Western tradition.
In the early 1970s, he participated in the NTU Philosophy Department Incident, advocating for academic freedom at great personal cost. Dismissed from his university position, he turned that adversity into an opportunity for deeper reflection, embodying the very Taoist wisdom he had devoted himself to studying.
His landmark work, an annotated and critically interpreted Laozi, transformed the way Chinese readers engage with the Tao Te Ching. Rather than treating Laozi as a mystical text beyond ordinary comprehension, Chen grounded it in clear, accessible modern language without sacrificing scholarly rigor. His annotated Zhuangzi is equally authoritative.
Chen also advanced the influential Taoist backbone thesis, arguing that Taoism, not Confucianism, forms the foundational core of pre-Qin Chinese philosophy. This sparked extensive debate across academic communities on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. In his later years he taught at both National Taiwan University and Peking University, serving as a vital intellectual bridge between the two communities. His life itself reads as a living commentary on the philosophy he championed.
