Description

She was born in Rome, went into exile in Brazil, and on that foreign land built spaces that belong to everyone.

Lina Bo Bardi was one of the most socially visionary architects of the twentieth century. Her design for the Sao Paulo Museum of Art, MASP, features an open ground-level plaza freely accessible to every citizen. Her transformation of the SESC Pompeia factory gave working-class communities a cultural landmark of their own. Her exhibitions in Salvador broke down the wall between elite culture and folk craftsmanship.

Her architecture is rough, weighty, and imperfect -- much like life itself. But within that roughness lives a profound love: love for the land, and love for the most ordinary people on it.

In this episode of the Tribute to the Masters series, we follow the story of Lina Bo Bardi from her upbringing in Italy to her rebirth in Brazil, from the Glass House to MASP, from folk craft exhibitions in Salvador to the ruins reborn at SESC Pompeia.

Who is architecture for? Her life is the most eloquent answer.
