徐復觀，一九零四至一九八二年，湖北浠水人，二十世紀最重要的新儒家代表人物之一。他的一生橫跨了中國最動盪的時代，從黃埔系統的軍官到蔣介石侍從室成員，再到台灣最具影響力的學者與雜誌創辦人，徐復觀的人生本身就是一部跌宕起伏的現代史。

Xu Fuguan, born 1904 and passing in 1982, stands as one of the most significant figures of Contemporary New Confucianism. His life traced an extraordinary arc across the most turbulent decades of modern Chinese history. Beginning as a military officer trained within the Whampoa system and serving in Chiang Kai-shek's personal secretariat, he underwent a profound intellectual transformation that led him to become one of Taiwan's most influential scholars, journal founders, and cultural voices.
His three towering scholarly contributions continue to shape academic discussion. His work A History of Chinese Theories of Human Nature on the Pre-Qin Period remains a foundational text for understanding how early Confucians conceived of moral potential in human beings. His landmark book The Spirit of Chinese Art proposed that the philosophy of Zhuangzi, not technical mastery, forms the true root of Chinese painting. And his bold arguments connecting Confucian tradition to democratic values challenged prevailing assumptions about the relationship between classical culture and political modernity.
In 1958, together with Mou Zongsan, Tang Junyi, and Zhang Junmai, he co-authored A Manifesto to the World on Behalf of Chinese Culture, one of the defining documents of the New Confucian movement.
