Description

She once stood motionless in a gallery while audience members were permitted to do whatever they wished to her body using any of the seventy-two objects on a nearby table, including a loaded gun. She once walked 2500 kilometers of the Great Wall of China to meet her former partner in the middle and say goodbye. She once sat in silence at the Museum of Modern Art in New York for seventy-five days, looking into the eyes of over 1500 strangers, one of whom was a man she had not spoken to in twenty-two years.

Marina Abramovic was born in 1946 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, to two war heroes who were rarely home. Raised by a deeply religious grandmother and governed by a fiercely strict mother, she grew up in an environment of suppression and discipline. That atmosphere became the fuel for an artistic life that would challenge the very definition of what art can be.

Abandoning the canvas, she chose her own body as her medium and spent fifty years asking the hardest possible questions about pain, presence, love, and mortality. This episode of Thinker J is the story of the grandmother of performance art and the woman who turned her life into her greatest work.
