Description

Before exploring Chapter 18 of the Book of Revelation, Irish Scripture Scholar Frances Hogan explains to us the mystery of Babylon; this will also help us understand why St. John wrote an entire chapter about the destruction of a city. Frances Hogan speaks to us about the holy city and sin city, or as she calls it, a tale of two cities.

In the Old Testament, the holy city is Jerusalem and the sin city is Babylon; in the church age, it is the church vs. the Roman empire, and in the 21st century, it is the church vs. the secular city. The mystery of Babylon seems to fit the situation depicted in the Book of Revelation. The sin city is godless, an enemy of God’s word, it is an enemy of God’s law and it becomes a persecutor of God’s people; Babylon was the evil power that the people recognized as this sin city.

While Babylon is the sin city, it still can be used as the scourge of God; it can be used in God’s hand like a dangerous instrument for chastisement and judgment. It was also prophesied that the city would be destroyed; it would be Yom Yahweh - the day of the Lord.
