Opioids are a highly effective drug when used to treat acute pain, but the downside is that many people who use them can quickly become addicted. The human body easily develops a tolerance for opioids, prompting many to start increasing the amount of the drug they take, often leading to drug dependency and possibly an overdose. Breaking an opioid addiction can be difficult, but not impossible.
