How much is enough?
It sounds like a financial question.
But the answer can shape where you live, what you give, whether you start something new, what happens to your business, and how much freedom you have to make decisions in the next chapter of your life.
In this episode of Inheritance to Income and the What Comes After Success? series, Garrick Francis sits down with CPA and Personal Financial Specialist Ed Fulbright for a wide-ranging conversation about money, stewardship, family, business ownership and preparing for what comes next.
Ed is a longtime financial professional in Durham, North Carolina, co-founder of Fulbright & Fulbright, host of Mastering Your Money on WNCU, and a longtime leader with Self-Help Credit Union.
Their conversation begins with a surprising answer to the question, “When did you achieve success?”
Ed’s answer: Never.
Because success changes.
The goals that mattered at 30 may not be the goals that matter at 60. And eventually the question may shift from “How much can I accumulate?” to:
How much is enough for the life I actually want?
In this conversation:
• Why success changes as our lives change
• The value of thinking in manageable five-year horizons
• Why “sleeping money” can create more choices
• How financial resources can create options during difficult seasons
• Why some people are considering living abroad in retirement
• The importance of knowing how much is enough
• How having enough can make generosity easier
• Give, Live and Steward as different ways to think about resources
• The family dynamics surrounding inherited businesses
• Why children should learn about money long before they inherit it
• Teaching the difference between wants and needs
• Helping children learn saving and investing
• Why owning business real estate can become part of a wealth strategy
• What Self-Help Credit Union teaches about mission, financial independence and long-term thinking
• Why a small business owner must decide what happens to the company if something happens to them
• Founder Gravity and the importance of developing leaders
• Why founders have to be willing to let other people try, fail and grow
• How mission can become bigger than the founder
• What someone in their 50s or 60s should consider before taking the plunge into a new venture
• Why knowing your “enough” matters before taking additional risk
One of the most important questions in the episode is also one of the simplest:
What is enough?
Enough to live well.
Enough to take care of the people you love.
Enough to give.
Enough to take a thoughtful risk.
Enough to make the next decision from choice rather than fear.
