When your career changes, your circle may need to change too.
Retirement, a layoff, a business sale, a career transition or simply entering a new season can change more than your paycheck and calendar. It can change the people, conversations, accountability, expertise and relationships that surrounded you every day.
Sometimes what looks like a motivation problem is really a proximity problem.
In this solo episode of Inheritance to Income, Garrick Francis explores one of the overlooked questions in planning for what comes next:
Who will be around you in your next chapter?
A career can provide an entire relationship ecosystem without us realizing it.
Colleagues challenge us.
Mentors teach us.
Peers introduce us to people.
Friends encourage us.
Professional communities expose us to new ideas.
And sometimes the person down the hall is the one who asks the question that keeps us moving.
When the role changes, much of that proximity can disappear.
But building a new circle does not mean abandoning the old one.
It means becoming intentional about which relationships should continue, what you still want to learn, who can expose you to new possibilities, and what you can contribute to the people and communities around you.
In this episode:
• Why relationships can remain while proximity disappears
• What a career transition can quietly take away besides income
• Why your next chapter may require new people and new rooms
• The different roles church, friendship, recreation, professional groups and community can play
• Garrick’s experience with his church community, men’s group, golf circle and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity
• Why he joined the My 7 Figure Podcast community and Social Proof Circle while building something new
• How to preserve important relationships before leaving a career or organization
• Why curiosity should come before entrepreneurship
• Learning new languages, technology, AI, photography, writing, speaking, investing, music or other skills in a new season
• Why your next circle should expose you to what you still have to learn
• How online relationships can create access while in-person relationships deepen trust
• Why the strongest communities are built around contribution, not collection
• The importance of finding people who ask the second question
• Garrick’s Four Names exercise for identifying what may be missing in your circle
THE FOUR NAMES EXERCISE
Write down:
1. Someone who knows my history.
2. Someone who understands my future.
3. Someone who will hold me accountable.
4. Someone I am responsible for helping.
Which name came immediately?
Which one took some time?
And which space is blank?
That blank may tell you something your financial or retirement plan never could.
Your next chapter does not only need a plan.
It needs people.
If you are thinking intentionally about what everything you have built should make possible next, explore the Legacy Deployment Reflection at:
It is built around three simple questions:
GIVE — What should what I have built make possible for others?
LIVE — What should it make possible in my own life?
STEWARD — What am I responsible for preparing, protecting or carrying forward?
