Show Notes: Things Aren't Right: The Disappearance of the Yuba County Five
Episode Title: Things Aren't Right: The Disappearance of the Yuba County Five (With Author Tony Wright)
Episode Description: In this week’s episode of Just One More Question, we delve into one of the most perplexing and tragic mysteries in recent history—the disappearance of the Yuba County Five. Our guest, Tony Wright, has authored the deeply researched book Things Aren’t Right: The Disappearance of the Yuba County Five, which offers the most comprehensive examination of this baffling case.
On February 24, 1978, five men—Ted Weiher, Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, Jackie Huett, and Gary Mathias—left Yuba County, California, to attend a basketball game in Chico. Four of these men had intellectual disabilities, while one was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Four days later, their car was found abandoned on a snow-covered road in the remote Plumas National Forest, 75 miles away from their intended route. Despite an intensive search by law enforcement, including the involvement of psychics and numerous reports of sightings, the investigation yielded little progress. Months later, the remains of four of the men were discovered in a remote area 12 miles from the car, with one found in a U.S. Forest Service trailer, surrounded by enough supplies to last for months.
Described as ‘Bizarre as hell,’ this case has mystified investigators and haunted the families of the missing men for over four decades. Tony Wright's meticulous research and dedication to uncovering the truth have made him one of the foremost authorities on this case. In today’s episode, Tony shares his insights and theories, bringing us as close as anyone might ever come to making sense of this enduring tragedy.
