The Australian Medicare Levy is an obscenity, a straight up tax-payer gift to the private health care industry and it needs to go. There's no reason or benefit to it, other than propping up the private health care industry - to all of our detriment. Good old Aussie ex-prime minister, Neo-liberal titan, John Howard (a perfect mix of Reagan, Nixon and Thatcher) came up with this con job bribe, to force people to buy private health insurance twenty years ago and why are we still putting up with it? (Note: I refer to it live as the medicare surcharge but it is both the medicare levy and the medicare levy surcharge that I am referring too)
