If the modern age has been defined by Islamic extremism, no country is more culpable than the USA, who have been the driving force in fomenting radical Islam for more than seventy years, usually to attack Russia. Nowhere is that more bitterly on display than in Afghanistan - where America began funding violent Islamic groups in the early seventies, and doing so wholesale under Operation Cyclone through the 1980's. Funding, arming, training and validating the Mujaheddin, who counted Osama Bin Laden in their ranks and would go on to become the Taliban and sending the once modernist west-looking Islamic nation back to a broken medieval caliphate. After two decades supporting them, America spent two decades fighting them, at a cost of trillions of dollars, to zero effect, leaving behind yet another dangerously failed state, where with America's longest war coming to an end - the Taliban took 50 of the 400 Afghanistan districts in the last two months alone.
