EPISODE 76 | Klown Kar: The KKK Can KMA (World Is Weird 8)

We're always products of the time and place we live in, so when a Southern group of friends got together in the wake of the American Civil War to start a fun club, it’s really not that big a surprise that it quickly transformed into the largest racist organization in the country. We’re talking about the Ku Klux Klan, a terrorist group that has been responsible for literally thousands of deaths and violent acts over the years.

But the Klan is not just one thing. It’s had at least three different incarnations and today is a motley collection of power-hungry criminals and grifters who may or may not believe some of the inflammatory and even outlandish narratives that try to bind the turbulent world of white supremacy into a cohesive whole.

As always, though, they can dress up in white robes with silly pointy hoods all they want, but they can’t stop being who they really are, deep down inside. Very often, their ambitions and appetites end up being their undoing.

We look at the three different incarnations of the Klan, how a movie helped revitalize them, the time Superman made them laughing stocks, when Beulah Mae Donald took them to court, some of their symbols, some of their more egregious crimes, and even a Klan-sponsored effort to take over a Caribbean island.
