In this episode Danny Houlihan highlights a special woman Mary O Malley Young, who left her mark on the people and the landscape of Ballybunion North Kerry Ireland in 1868, this mark will be there for years to come.
Mary was a kind person to all including young orphan children and locals alike. Mary was a local woman from Kilconly who married a tea planter by the name of John Young. Marys life and family spanned a history which saw the rising evictions in her area resulting in Mary moving to Kilrush working at Crottys and it has been said in Killkee also.
Mary O Malley Young was instrumental in starting a school in Doon at her home, later she had this handed over to the nuns resulting in a covent and later a school on her property. Many years later Mary was the driving force and founder of St Johns Church Ballybunion which she funded.
Mary O Malley was an Iconic local woman who we all to this day owe a debth of gratitude to.
