Description

By the turn of the twentieth century, and much as with Nicaragua, American corporations were consolidating large landholdings and lobbied the US government to protect their investments as they ran into conflict over issues such as peasants rights. The first US military incursion took place in 1903 and occurred consistently over the succeeding decades. Because the country was effectively controlled by American fruit corporations, it was the original inspiration for the term ‘banana republic.’
