Matthew 6:22-24

The past few weeks we have looked at this whole matter of laying up treasures in heaven (Matt 6:19–21). Jesus has commanded us to lay up treasures in heaven. Now in verses 22–24, he drives the point home. First, by using a metaphor about eyesight. If someone cannot see well their whole body is in the dark. Similarly, if our spiritual eyes are not seeing things properly it will impact everything we do. A second metaphor involves the impossibility of being a slave to two masters. As we have seen already in this gospel and in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus demands total allegiance from his disciples.
