“El rugido estrepitoso de un gigantesco monstruo subterráneo me despertó a las 3:33:33 de la madrugada del 4 de febrero de 1976”, así empieza Rafael a contarnos su historia, siendo un joven de 15 años, clase media acomodada, pero con un historial familiar de al menos un siglo de luchas sociales, en ese país olvidado que es Guatemala. También conocido como el terremoto social, 33 segundos de destrucción y al menos 30 mil muertos, dejaron en evidencia la miseria y vulnerabilidad de la mayoritaria población indígena. Rafael y un grupo de amigos del Colegio Americano, organizan una pequeña brigada para apoyar las tareas de reconstrucción en la pequeña ciudad de Comalapa. Allí, entre los escombros, encuentra al hermano mayor de un amigo y, sin imaginarlo, da el primer paso en un proceso delicado y peligroso que lo llevará a las filas del movimiento guerrillero clandestino.
The Earthquake
"The thunderous roar of a gigantic underground monster woke me up at 3:33:33 in the early morning of February 4, 1976," thus begins Rafael’s story. A 15-year-old from a well-off middle-class background, but with a family history spanning at least a century of social struggles, in that forgotten country that is Guatemala. Also known as the social earthquake, 33 seconds of destruction and at least 30,000 deaths exposed the misery and vulnerability of the majority Indigenous population. Rafael and a group of friends from the American School organized a small brigade to support reconstruction efforts in the small city of Comalapa. There, among the rubble, he finds the older brother of a friend, and without realizing it, takes the first step in a delicate and dangerous process that will lead him into the ranks of the clandestine guerrilla
