VNPs comprise regular arrays of virus coat proteins and have highly defined three-dimensional structure, providing an engineering scaffold that is superior to synthetic particles (Figure 1). The structure of VNPs can be altered by modifying the nucleic acid template that codes for viral proteins prior to synthesis, and by chemically decorating the particles by adding conjugates to specific amino acid side chains. VNPs are composed primarily of protein and are therefore known for their biocompatibility, biodegradability, ability to cross biological barriers, and efficient delivery of cargo to target cells.
