Description

In this episode, the owners of James Rowe Plumbing share their reflections on independence, both as a national holiday and as a core principle of their business. They acknowledge the reality of their trade: while the team is anxious for a planned long weekend over the Fourth of July, "planned" is always taken with a grain of salt. In plumbing, when customers have an emergency, they are there 24/7, 365 days a year, including Independence Day. Yet, this commitment does not diminish their deep appreciation for the advantages and opportunities they cherish in this country, particularly the ability to own and operate their own small business according to their values.

For them, 'independence' specifically means the freedom to run their business with the values important to them: fairness, integrity, and honesty. They strive to execute these values daily and work to instill their importance in their employees as well. They credit the independence afforded in this country for giving them the opportunity to open a business and operate it with a level of integrity they found lacking elsewhere. The owner recalls a pivotal story from her husband, James, who overheard a plumber at a supply store bragging about overselling parts and services to an older lady. He also heard others speak about purposefully not carrying many parts on hand to justify charging customers for a return trip. These conversations disgusted them and directly fueled their desire to provide honest dealings and quality work for their community.

They view their customers not just as clients, but as the family members and neighbors that make up their community—moms, dads, sons, daughters, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. It is their responsibility to treat every customer as a brother or sister, a neighbor, or a friend. Thanks to the independence they have, they note the opportunity to serve any and all who need their services. This service is most critical during holiday weekends when emergencies arise, a time when you truly know who your friends are. Their reflection is a testament to building a business where personal integrity and community care are paramount, ideals they see as intrinsically linked to the freedoms celebrated on the Fourth of July. They conclude with a wish for a safe and memorable Independence Day weekend, expressing gratitude for the chance to serve.
