Why Does Shame Create Distance Between Parents and Children?
Every parent needs to correct behavior, set boundaries, and teach accountability. But there is a profound difference between telling your child, “That behavior wasn't okay,” and asking, “What's wrong with you?”
One corrects behavior. The other attacks identity.
In Part 7 of the Breaking Relationships Series, we explore how shaming, labeling, and public humiliation can damage the parent-child relationship and influence how children see themselves.
Words like lazy, selfish, dramatic, difficult, and ungrateful may be spoken in moments of frustration, but children can begin to internalize these labels. Instead of learning, “I made a poor choice,” they may start believing, “I'm a bad kid.”
So how can we hold our children accountable without making them feel ashamed of who they are?
In this episode, you'll discover:
Guilt vs. shame: Why recognizing a mistake can encourage growth, while shame can lead children to hide their struggles.
The impact of labels: How repeated negative words can shape a child's self-image.
Public humiliation: Why embarrassing children in front of siblings, friends, or relatives can undermine trust and connection.
Accountability without shame: How to correct behavior while preserving your child's dignity.
Teaching instead of criticizing: Practical ways to help your child take responsibility, learn from mistakes, and make better choices.
💡 Your takeaway: Children grow when their behavior is corrected without damaging their dignity.
📝 Your action step: For one week, eliminate character labels. Instead of defining your child by what they did, describe the behavior and help them understand what they can do differently.
Remember, your goal isn't simply to stop unwanted behavior. It's to raise a child who can take responsibility, learn from mistakes, and develop a healthy sense of self.
