In this talk, Dr. Lawrence Feingold will discuss the Council of Trent and Reform of the Church.
A few years before Luther published his ninety-five theses, in the Fifth Lateran Council in 1512, one of the Fathers, Egidio da Viterbo, summed up the Catholic idea of reform : “Man must be changed by religion, not religion by man.” In other words, Catholic reform is instituted to help men to receive God’s transformative power into a deeper image and likeness of Him so as to enter into a deeper communion with Him in His Church. It is not changing the Church to make it fit secular man’s self-understanding.
